A Study of Revelation - Part Three
(As taught by Andy Neckar at Community Bible Chapel-Hico, TX)

In chapter five the apostle John is given a scroll sealed with seven seals. What is in the scroll? We will see that all seven seals are opened but the book is never opened in scripture.

We notice that no one in heaven or on earth was worthy to open the seals of this book.

Rev 5:2-4 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

The Bible has no record of the book ever being read.

One of the 24 Elders that sit about the Throne of God tells us who is worthy to open the seals. This Elder clearly identifies the person worthy to open the book.

Rev 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

The Lion is called the king of beasts. The King came out of the Israelite tribe of Juda

Matt 2:6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Heb 7:14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang (like a lion) out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

Rom 15:12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

Isa 11:10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

Jesus Christ is the only one worthy to open the seals. He was descendant from David who was the son of Jesse.

Side Note---Esaias and Isaiah are spoken of in the N.T. as one and the same. The O.T. has the Hebrew word 'Eliyah (ay-lee-yaw'); translated as Elijah, and Eliah. We notice that Elias and Elijah are spoken of as one and the same in the N.T.

You will notice that as the book is opened the seven seals must be first broken, or opened. These are seven judgments to be loosed upon the earth. This person is to "loose" the seven seals.

We notice that Jesus is in the midst of the throne where God sits. He is not in the MIDDLE, as the word "midst" is also translated "between". Makes sense too. Jesus is by the side (right side-see Luke 22:69; Mark:16:19; Heb 10:12) of the throne of God between the Elders who sit around the throne and the four beasts (Cherubim) that cover the Throne of God.

Rev 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

The Cherubim and the 24 Elders are holding the prayers of the saints, that is the believers here on earth, before the Throne of God.

Rev 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

Now we know that this is a sweet odour, or odor, or smell.

2 Cor 2:15 For we are unto God a sweet savour ( a good scent-smell-fragrance) of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish. We are a sweet odor to God if our prayers and preaching saves people are not. It is the prayers and preaching that is the sweet odor.

In verse nine they are singing a new song. A new song is spoken of 6 times in Psalms and once in Isaiah.

This ninth verse also speaks of God saving people from every nationality and color from every country.

Verse ten verifies this verse.

2 Tim 2:12 "If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:" and Rev 20:4 speaks of this reign again.

This verse also speaks of we believers being priests. In the millenium we will rule the earth as kings, (rulers) and as priests we will wait on God for the people, as did the O.T. priests. We will be acting as kings and priests for only 1000 years until eternity sets in. (Rev 1:6; 20:6

Verse eleven gives us an idea of just how many angels there are in heaven.

A thousand times a thousand is a million. Her we have ten million times thousands of thousands. Well, a thousand million is a billion. We have ten billion times thousands. A thousand billion is a trillion. Could be there are many trillions of angels in heaven and Satan has another 1/3 of the original angels. Regardless if this estimate of mine is correct or not, the Bible states that there are to many angels to count.

Every creature, that is the whole world can hear us saints give praise and glory to God.

Only 6 seals are opened in chapter six and the seventh is not opened until the trumpet judgments are about to be announced

The first four form a group; the fifth and sixth stand by themselves. Each of the first four is introduced with a rider on a horse, from which came the saying, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse."

The first seal opened
Rev 6:1-2 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

This rider is not the appearance of the anti-christ at the beginning of the tribulation. The saints are still here on earth. He has a bow, but no arrows. He is not to bring war or trouble. Also, he wears a crown.

This is a heavenly messenger, or angel, on the white horse and he brings periods of peace on the earth.

It is a big mistake to identify the first rider on the white horse as the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the rider on the white horse in Revelation 19.

Let us read Zechariah chapter one.

He sees a rider on a red horse. This rider is a heavenly messenger scouting the earth to see the condition of it. He reports back that the earth is still there and is at rest. No major wars going on

The Lord don't like this. He is not pleased that the heathen are at ease and living in peace. He will send war upon the Gentile heathens that afflict the Israelites. God uses the wrath of man to fulfill His purpose.

Ps 76:10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.

The remainder, those not killed in a war, shall be brought to fear and under control

Zechariah had many visions, and in one he saw this.
Zech 6:1-7 And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass. In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses; And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled (spotted) and bay (Strong's definition-red like) horses. (Synonyms for bay are, Roan-reddish brown-ruddy-reddish) Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord? And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth. The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country. And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth.

The four horsemen in revelation are the four spirits of the heavens that go surveying the earth and bring about God's will. Their colors are white, red, black and pale, which is dun- brownish colored.

A roan horse and a dun horse and a bay horse are all the same horse. They are spotted, brownish red

The second seal opened
Rev 6:4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

This second rider, or messenger brings war and bloodshed to fulfill God's purposes.

The third seal opened
Rev 6:5-6 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

This messenger on the black horse follows the war and is the result of war and much bloodshed. The result of war is scarcity of food. A lack of food stuff.

Penny is translated from the Greek word denarion (day-nar'-ee-on); a pence or a Roman denarius which was a days wage for the average Roman and the measures was the daily measure of grain consumed in a day. Food would be so scarce after a war that it would take the equivalent of a day's wages just to buy food to live for that day. And this is a proven fact.

The fourth seal opened
Rev 6:7-8 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: (Strong's definition-dun colored) and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

This rider brings death as a result of war and pestilence, that is affliction because of famine. We could see in Rwanda, Africa in the 1990's that the aftermath of war many times kills as many or more than the war itself.

The fifth seal opened
Rev 6:9-11 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

Martyrdom comes to the CHURCH from age to age in different intensities

Matt 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

The sixth seal opened
Rev 6:12-17 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Luke 21:7-12 And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

Many say this is a sign of great nuclear explosions, but I don't believe this. I believe this to be a direct marvelous work of God himself. On two occasions in the past, men experienced divine judgment in the form of great darkness. One was at the time of the ninth plague upon Egypt

Exod 10:21-23 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

Another was a few hours before Christ's death on the cross.

Matt 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

On the ninth hour Jesus died.

Sometimes God takes a direct hand in things and sometimes He works through men.

On the other hand this could be speaking of the ushering in of the nuclear age in 1945, but I still believe that these are marvelous works of God Himself. As far as the stars falling upon the earth, this would most probable be great meteorite showers, and this time they wouldn't all burn up before impact.

Great earthquakes would naturally cause great volcanic eruptions that would discharge a bunch of volcanic ash in the sky, and the moon at night would look blood red through the haze. The earthquakes and volcanic eruptions would be so great as to displace mountains and islands.

People will hid in underground shelters and in caves to escape the hot volcanic ash and rocks and the meteorite showers.

Next study, the opening of the seventh seal and the beginning of the trumpet judgments. The Holy Spirit is not yet taken out of the way as the saints are still here on earth.
