I Peter Chapter 3

1 Pet 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

In 1 Peter chapter 2, verse 18 Peter is addressing servants/slaves.
1 Pet 2:18-20 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

Now he addresses the women. So, you wives do similarly-do likewise. Be subject-be obedient to your husbands-RIGHT or WRONG. Sound "male chauvinistic"? Sound arrogant and egotistical and dictatorial and oppressive and unjust? REMEMBER THIS--GOD SAYS THIS. This is HIS RULE for the man and the woman.

Did a man CHOOSE to be born a male? Did a woman CHOOSE to be born a female? Not your fault right?

What did you do? You CHOSE to answer the call to salvation that's what. Now that you are a child of God you MUST do as HE says. FATHER KNOWS BEST.

By your conversation (behavior) you may very well be the cause to lead your husband into obedience to God.

1 Pet 3:2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled (word added- the scripture) with fear.

When the man sees your "chase" (innocent, modest-clean and pure) behavior, he may FEAR God and come to obedience to the Word.

1 Pet 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning (word added) of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

The above verse tells us that the adorning of the woman should not be "outwardly". It is not to be seen on the outside, but "inwardly"

Adorning here means to decorate in an orderly arrangement. The woman is to keep her "inward self" in an orderly and chase arrangement. (nature-personality-character)

Here, the Holy Spirit is not telling the woman how to dress her BODY, He is telling her how to dress her NATURE.

1 Pet 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

The ornament, (example/ illustration) of a meek (humble-submissive-gentle-calm) and quite (subdued-modest-chase-refined) spirit. (mind)

Let it be the HIDDEN WOMAN of the HEART. The INWARD SELF which is not corruptible as jewelry and apparel are.

1 Pet 3:5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

This is how the Old Testament holy believers adorned themselves and the OT was written for our example.

Rom 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

1 Pet 3:6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Believers are the children of Abraham and Sarah. It was to HIM and his SEED, that is all those LIKE HIM that are saved.

Gal 3:7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Abraham's wife called him lord, that is sir-master.

"as long as ye do well"- to be a well doer, as favor or duty, and not out of a fear of your husband that will "scare you off".

Now Paul addressess the men.
1 Pet 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Similarly- In like manner, you husbands live with your wives "according to knowledge". What knowledge? "Scriptural knowledge of the woman"

She is the weaker person. The man is a vessel unto the Lord and the woman is a vessel unto the man. Vessels are to be USEFUL. The man is to be useful to God and the woman to the man.

The man is to give "honor" to the woman. He is to esteem her to the highest degree. He is to highly value her. She is to be precious to him.

Her role on this earth, which is only temporary in "under" the man. That is "subordinate to him", but her role is heaven is EQUAL. She is an "equal heir" to the grace of God.

Feelings of resentment, growing from selfish conduct in the home, make effective prayer impossible. This is good reason why God does not answer the Christian prayer many times.

1 Pet 3:8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

"Be of one mind". Be harmonious. Be pleasand-loving-kindly-sweet-affectionate-considerate-sensitive-tender to each other.

"Be pitiful" sympathetic-tender hearted.
"Be courteous" humble-minded.

1 Pet 3:9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

NOW-THIS IS IT. This is the typical family. THIS is OUR FAMILY. THIS is ME & MOM. THIS is probably YOU and YOUR SPOUSE. THIS is 99.9/10 % of the Christian family. THIS is the NORN, NOT the EXCEPTION.

I preached this in a sermon once. About how I sometimes-well-often-want to wreck revenge on those that cross me.

I'm gonna work hard on this because I know that evil for evil, and railing for railing is wrong, and "I want that blessing".

This verse hit ME, and you watch and see of I show works meet for repentance.

1 Pet 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

This is ME AGAIN and probably YOU. I WANT THIS REWARD. I want to "love life" and "see good days". I've been seeing good days, but even "better days" are coming if I take heed.

1 Pet 3:11 Let him eschew evil, (go out of his way to avoid evil) and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue (pursue) it.

1 Pet 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

The face of the Lord is against Christians that do evil as well as the lost. The prayers of the lost are NEVER heard by God, and the prayers of the saved that live un-righteously in the flesh are heard, but many times not answered.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

"of a righteous". Strongs # 1342 dikaios (dik'-ah-yos); innocent, holy in "character or act"

All Christians are innocent and holy in Spirit, but this refers to those who are so "in the flesh".

1 Pet 3:13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

What is this "good" Paul is speaking of here?

Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Who can "permanently" harm us if we break no law.

1 Pet 3:14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

When the Christian suffers unjustly we are not to be afraid. God is WITH us. His Spirit is IN us. Unjust suffering for whatever reason, will not last long.

"Justly" suffering gives us no gain.

1 Pet 2:20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

1 Pet 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

We are to mentally venerate-worship-honor-give reverence to God in our thoughts-feelings-mind.

We are to "always" be ready to "willingly" give our salvation witness. This is the hope that is in us. Don't say, "I just cannot put it into words". The Holy Spirit will lead you in what to say.

1 Pet 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

We are to be in "good" conscience, or be "keenly" not "vaguely", aware of the fact that when the world hears our witness they will speak evil of us, and even though we are in good behavior they will falsely accuse us of bad behavior.

1 Pet 3:17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

Why? Because this is pleasing to God. See 1 Peter 2:20 again. God's Son suffered unjustly and God expects us to also if need be.

1 Pet 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

God permitted His Son to suffer unjustly. Can we creatures expect less?

1 Pet 3:19 By which also he went (departed-make a journey-talk a walk)and preached unto the spirits in prison;

"By which" After that. After what? After Christ was "quickened" by the Spirit. (Resurrected) He preached to the spirits in Abraham's Bosom.

1 Pet 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

"Sometime" 4218 pote (pot-eh');These spirits were "aforetime", "in old time", "in times past" disobedient sinners but not eternally lost.

"When once" "After that" "as soon as" Christ preached to some, (I believe those from Adam to the Flood) and after that He preached to Noah & his family, the beginning of a new world (different world) He preached to absolutely all.

After God pronounced judgment upon the earth through the preaching of Noah while he was building the ark only eight were saved. A small remnant. They were actually saved "from" water.

The Greek word dia (dee-ah'); is also translated "from". They were saved by the "ark" from the flood water.

Eph 4:8-10 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led (captured) captivity (those in captivity in Abraham's Bosom) captive,(He captured those in captivity for Himself) and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

HE descended into hell.
Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

Hell- Strong's # 86 haides (hah'-dace); "Hades" or the place (state) of departed souls:

Hades is Abraham's Bosom.

See the word "hell" in this verse.

Matt 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Hell- Strong's # 1067 geena (gheh'-en-nah); A name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment:

Christ went to Abraham's Bosom, NOT hell.

1 Pet 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

The "like figure". The "counterpart" (opposite of) the "symbol". Noah was saved "from" water The exact opposite of the believers salvation in the New Testament. We are save "by" water. This is what the water is symbolic of and that is the Death and burial of Christ.

Being submerged in water. (drowning-dying) as the Old Testament people did at the time of the flood.

Raising up out of the water alive. The resurrection of Christ.

Baptism is not the putting away-casting off-washing off the filth of the "flesh". It is the "symbol" of the putting away-casting off-the washing away the filth of the "soul".

Baptism is the "answer", the seeking-the asking- the desire of a fit-proper-right moral consciencness in relation to God and His Word by (because of) the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

1 Pet 3:22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
