Northeastside church is largest of its kind in Midwest.

Standing in the pulpit at Jesus Metropolitan Community Church, Pastor Jeff Miner raises his voice in a challenge for the congregation to share the word of God.

"What Jesus is calling us to do, by our lives, by our actions, by our attitudes, by our behavior, is to be constantly painting a portrait of Christ so compelling that when people see us, they will feel drawn to the beauty of God," he says.

It's a scene common in evangelical churches throughout Central Indiana every Sunday.

But, in this church, it also is different.

Miner is gay -- as is most of his congregation.

The 13-year-old church, affiliated with the California-based Metropolitan Community Churches, has the largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender congregation in the Midwest, according to MCC headquarters. Since it was started by four members of a Bible study group in 1991, the church has grown to nearly 300 members and offers three Sunday services attracting 400 people a week.

This church, Miner said, is a spiritual oasis for a group of Christians who have felt uncomfortable or been cast out of other congregations.

"There's something here that you don't feel at a lot of churches," said Andrea Platt, 41, Pittsboro.

Platt and her partner, Jennifer Barnes, 42, have been attending the church for about five years. Like many in the congregation, they were raised in homes where religion played an important role, but as gay adults had struggled to hold onto a faith that condemned them for whom they loved.

"We came because of the congregation, but that is not why we stay," Platt said. "We stay because of what we get here. The teaching is so grounded in the Bible."

Added Barnes: "It's like we found the genuine Christian community."

Jesus MCC's rapid growth in the past seven years is based on an unlikely model -- the same high-demand, Scripture-driven evangelical approach employed by many of the churches that rail against homosexuality.

The irony is not lost on Miner. Raised in a fundamentalist Baptist church, the Acton native attended Bob Jones University while struggling with what he believed to be an insurmountable clash between his sexuality and faith. That conflict initially derailed Miner's dream of going into the ministry, so he earned a law degree from Harvard University and went to work as a corporate lawyer.

But years of prayer and study convinced him homosexuality and Christianity are not mutually exclusive. Now, he is helping lead many others in the gay community back to God.

"What we are doing is not novel. It is the classic Bob Jones Christian evangelical model translated to a tribe of people untouched by God," said Miner, 46, who joined Jesus MCC in 1997.

There are no outward signs that the church -- in a former industrial building at 2950 E. 55th Place on the Northeastside -- is any different from the more than 575 other religious congregations in Marion County.

Even inside, where members share in a lively worship that includes all the standard components -- from Scripture readings and hymns to the Lord's Prayer and Communion -- there are few clues this is a predominantly gay congregation.

A nursery bustles with children coloring and playing, and each worship service includes a time when Miner shares Bible stories with members' children gathered at the front of the church.

Projectors beam Scripture verses and the words to hymns onto walls flanking a large cross that is the centerpiece of the sanctuary. Services are interpreted in sign language, and sermons are recorded to post on the church Web site.

As Miner preaches the Gospel, worshippers caught up in the spirit raise their hands toward heaven and offer "amens." And after services, they mingle over coffee and refreshments or head off to church-organized activities.

"People are looking for something real and encompassing in their lives, and we're building a ministry around that," Miner said.

If clergy and members from churches that condemn homosexuals would attend a service at Jesus MCC with a blindfold on, Miner said, "they would think it is just like their church -- until the word gay or transgendered is mentioned, then they would be horrified."

Some conservative Christians are -- pointing to several Bible passages they say condemn homosexual behavior.

David M. Craig, a professor of religious studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, said views that homosexuality is an "abomination" and "unnatural" come from literal interpretations of verses in Leviticus, Romans and the Sodom and Gomorrah stories. While he does not agree with such interpretations, Craig said they are common in many conservative Catholic and Protestant denominations.

"Intellectual Christians, liberal or conservative, understand that rules have to be read in context," said Miner, who has co-authored a book that addresses what he calls "the clobber passages."

Miner said the Bible includes more than 600 rules -- from prohibiting work on the Sabbath to requiring women to cover their heads -- that are not followed by most Christians, including many who condemn homosexuals.

"The record we have of Jesus' life illustrates that Jesus always chose compassion for people over strict adherence to Biblical rules," he wrote in "The Children Are Free," published by the church in 2002.

Miner sees Jesus MCC playing a role similar to that of black churches, which grew out of discrimination in many white denominations and now speak to life experiences of blacks.

"We can apply the Gospel with great relevance to the life situations of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgendered," he said.

In a recent sermon, Miner pointed to empty chairs in the sanctuary and asked the congregation to envision men, women and children who could benefit from hearing the word of God.

"That chair back there represents a teenage boy, and unless someone reaches him with the good news, sometime in the next three years he will take a gun, point it at his head, pull the trigger -- and we all know why."

A wave of "amens" and nods swept across the sanctuary.

Minutes later, Miner lightened the mood by telling members they don't have to be creepy or pushy to share their love of God.

"We say, 'Jesus, please, I'll do anything. . . . I'll give all my power tools to the poor. I'll take my Judy Garland albums and break them over my knee . . . but don't ask me to be one of those weird people.' "

The messages resound with worshippers at Jesus MCC, who have lived the experiences he shares and are excited to feel that God is with them.

"What we are trying to do is weave Christ into the fabric of our lives," Miner said.

And many are taking up that challenge. Miner said about two-thirds of the regular attendees volunteer with the church's more than 30 outreach ministry programs, which range from helping the homeless to support groups for couples and singles.

Jesus MCC isn't the only area church that is accepting of gays. Ten other "open and affirming" congregations are listed on the Web site. But even in some of those congregations, a gay person might not feel completely welcome, said Nancy McBride, 57, Indianapolis.

"They say, 'We accept everybody,' but then they say, 'Don't try to be a minister or don't hold hands or kiss your spouse,' " said McBride, a founding member of Jesus MCC.

"We shouldn't have to have a church started by gays, but that is what it took."

Now that it is here, Miner and the congregation have big plans.

"We see ourselves 10 years from now with a congregation of 1,000 to 1,500 that not only focuses on our congregation but is spinning off resources to help other congregations replicate the model in other communities."

Growing visibility and community involvement is important to increasing understanding and acceptance of gay Christians, but it also carries some risk, Miner said. Several other MCC churches around the country have been targets of hate crimes, including arsons and firebombings. So far, he said, the local congregation has not been targeted.

"If we don't take a stand, there will be at least 100 Hoosier teens over the next decade -- and probably more -- who will kill themselves out of self-hatred that is fed, in part, by the churches they are growing up in," Miner said.

"When the message is you are an abomination to God, that doesn't leave many options."

[Editor] “Sounds” like the “real thing”, doesn’t it?  May ‘look” like the “real thing”. BUT—

2 Cor 11:3-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

These Satanic ministers partake of their father's perversity (Jn 8:44), parade in his theological paraphernalia, and perish in his predestinated perdition (Mt 7:22-23; 25:41; Rev 20:10,15). How do such men, still with us today, disguise themselves as ministers of righteousness?

BY DENYING THE WRITTEN WORD OF GOD. They have changed the Word of God into a lie. Such as-Rom 1:24-32, and Lev 18:22; 20:13

A SAMPLING OF LETTER I RECEIVE (out of hundreds monthly)

Andy,  I received this, and immediately thought of you...  XXXX

If God has called you to be really like Jesus, He will draw you into a life of crucifixion and humility, put upon you such demands of obedience, that you will not be able to follow other people, or measure yourself by other Christians, and in many ways He will seem to let other people do things which He will not let you do.

Other Christians and ministers who seem very religious and useful, may push themselves and pull wires, and work schemes to carry out their plans, but you cannot do it, and if you attempt to do it, you will meet with such failure and rebuke from the Lord as to make you sorely penitent.

Others may boast of themselves, of their work, of their success, of their writings, but the Holy Spirit will not let you do any such thing, and if you begin it, He will lead you into some deep mortification that will make you despise yourself and all your good works.

Others may be allowed to succeed in making money, or may have a legacy left to them, but it is likely God will keep you poor, because He wants you to have something far better than gold, namely, a helpless dependence upon Him, that He may have the privilege of supplying your needs day by day out of an unseen treasury.

The Lord may let others be honored and be put forward, and keep you hidden in obscurity, because He wants to produce some choice fragrant fruit for His coming glory, which can only be produced in the shade. He may let others be great, but keep you small. He may let others do a work for Him and get the credit for it, but He will make you work and toil on without knowing how much you are doing; and then to make your work still more precious, He may let others get the credit for the work you have done, and thus make your reward 10 times greater when Jesus comes.

The Holy Spirit will put a strict watch over you, with a jealous love, and will rebuke you for little works and feelings, or for wasting your time, which other Christians never feel distressed over. So make up your mind that God is an infinite Sovereign, and has a right to do as He pleases with His own. He may not explain to you a thousand things which puzzle your reason in His dealings with you, but if you absolutely sell yourself to be His love slave, He will wrap you up in a jealous love, and bestow upon you many blessings which come only to those who are in the inner circle.

Settle it forever then, that you are to deal directly with the Holy Spirit, and that He is to have the privilege of tying your tongue, or chaining your hand, or closing your eyes, in ways He does not seem to use with others. Now, when you are so possessed with the Living God that you are, in your secret heart, pleased and delighted over this particular, personal, private, jealous, guardianship and management of the Holy Spirit over your life, you will have found the vestibule of Heaven.

Greetings in the Lord, Brother Andy.

Yesterday, I was reading your message while listening to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I was encouraged enough to stand up for Christ, though weak and shy. So I bought a small column on the daily free-info page (that is to be picked up freely. I don't know what that is called in English.) for about $950/year to be carried every Saturdays. I couldn't just sit and listen/hear/watch/sigh/moan/ complain/hate/... ... I had to stand up and tell the world the TRUTH of God. The false teachers don't lead the followers on the Road-to-the-Life, at least to me seem so. I must edit a small amount of writing every week, condensed and strong and effective messages. I'm wondering: to the Unbelievers outside of Christ) or to the Mistaken (so-called believers)? I hope to get inspirations time and again from your battlefield experience. I just love Christ and want to glorify Him. I want to be just a little bit of 'Savour of Christ.' (II Cor 2:14-15)

So help me God
I love to hear from you and your friends.
Peace be with you.

Hi Andy do you remember a year or so ago I think it was you that sent out a comment about a story going around about the preacher and  the boy who had a cage of birds and the preacher bought them and set them  free  and also along with that story came about the example of how satan  owned all the people and Jesus asked him how much he wanted for all the people  and  satan said "all your blood and your life" and Jesus said  done!   anyway I got that story emailed t me today and I remember you  wrote something about it...... there is something about that story that is not  right do you remember??????  let me know soon   Thank  you Donna XXX

I think I did write about it once, but I cannot find it now.

I think the thing bothering you is that Christ did not pay the penalty to SATAN, but that He paid the penalty to GOD.

Christ never PAID ANYTHING to Satan. He DEFEATED him.

Thanks Andy now that I look at it that’s exactly it!!! Thanks for your quick response.  Donna XXX

Dear Sir,

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Please, I would like to congratulate your ministry which has been a help to me and my brethren in the Lord. We are treating a topic about women and I would be glad if you can be of help in the topic: Women role in the church.

Thanks and God bless you all in Jesus name.

James Caviezel has been swamped with requests to perform miracles by Mexican fans who believe he really is Jesus Christ.

The 35-year-old actor, who played Jesus in Mel Gibson¹s THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, was on a one-week tour of the east Mexican state of Veracruz.

According to Mexican newspaper "Reforma," dozens of residents from villages throughout the state, one of the poorest in the country, asked Caviezel to heal the sick and perform other miracles as he passed through.

The actor, who is himself a strict Catholic, said: "The belief of these people really moved me. It was a shock for me to see how they came up to me to ask for my help. I had to explain to them that I was only an actor, and wasn¹t really the son of God."

Mexico has the biggest population of Catholics in the world after Brazil and has been visited by the Pope five times.

.I just wanted again to write back a couple comments.  It's funny how the pro-gay crowd has no problem with "dissing" the  verses from Leviticus that admonish us to not engage in homosexual behavior,  saying that they don't mean what they say, don't say what they mean, "I know  what it says but what it really means is...", isn't meant for us, is only  symbolic, etc., etc., ad nauseum, but how come they don't find fault with all  the other admonitions included in those same verses? Incest with close relatives, pedophilia, beastiality, sexual behavior as a form of worship, etc., are all spoken of in those passages yet the pro-gays don't bother to bring up all the ethno-linguistic nuances regarding THOSE passages, or how they should be ignored too. Of course not - because they don't advance their agenda any!

(Excerpts from article)
"The record we have of Jesus' life illustrates that Jesus always chose compassion for people over strict adherence to Biblical rules," he wrote in "The Children Are Free," published by the church in  2002.  ----->

"Jesus always chose compassion  for people over strict adherence to Biblical rules"  If this is the truth, and Jesus always chose "compassion" over "obedience", can  they explain this verse? (Mark 6:11) "And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them."   Miner sees Jesus MCC playing a role similar to that of black churches,  which grew out of discrimination in many white denominations and now speak to  life experiences of blacks.

I've heard this non-sense before, and that's just what it is - non-sense! People are born the color they are born. There are five basic colors of people in the world - black, white, red, yellow and brown.  People have no choice as to which color group they are born into. When it comes  to homosexuals, however, NO ONE is BORN GAY!!! It is not a genetic trait or bio-chemical makeup, it is a lifestyle choice based upon one's personal  preferences. It is NURTURE, not NATURE. There is no gene or chemical which  dictates what kind of art someone is attracted to, what kind of music one will  like, or what kind of interior design someone enjoys over another. There is no gene or chemical that dictates someone will like blonds over brunettes or redheads, or European women over Asian women or Hispanic women. And there is no gene or chemical that dictates that a person will be sexually attracted to a member of their own sex over one of the opposite sex. (Ask any geneticist or bio-chemist worth his or her salt, and they will confirm this to be true).  Gay/lesbian sex is entirely based upon personal preference - what feels good  (and could arguably be traced back to the "if it feels good, do it" mentality of  the 60's and 70's). I've had gay people ask me "Do you really think anyone  would actually DECIDE to live this lifestyle, considering the rejection,  the prejudice, the humiliation, and all the other derogatory aspects of the gay  lifestyle?" My answer is always an emphatic "YES"! Do people who are into S&M choose that lifestyle? How about those who are into B&D?  Pedophilia? Prostitution? All of these lifestyles face similar rejection, humiliation, prejudice, etc., yet they aren't into their "thing" because of rampant genes!! They CHOOSE to live those lifestyles - even with all the negative, derogatory aspects. Why? Because it "feels good" - its what they personally get into, how they get their "sexual rush". Same goes for the gay lifestyle - do they choose it? Yes, they do? Why? Because, to them, it "feels good"!   Rev. Bob

Dear Andy, I just read Loving our enemies and that was good because it was scripture. If we aren't careful we will be hating the people that we feel are enemies to God in the wrong way. I had a hard time with mostly preachers for a looooooooong time, especially after I realized I sat in a Baptist denomination for 20 years and gave away over 50,000.00 to a flesh and blood man who spent it on himself and we were silly enough to sit and believe that we were giving this money to God. And today I know God doesn't want a penny!! He wants us to love Him with all our heart! But God has helped me with the way I look at those people and now I have learned ALL preachers that stand in a pulpit are believing Paul over Jesus. Jesus says in Matthew for nobody to try to teach anybody and do not let anybody teach us but Him. When I think of the people now, I have to feel sorry for them because they are going to hell if they keep on this broad road of destruction.. and I have had some people to do some pretty terrible things to me in life and I haven't been right all of the time, I have done some terrible things too but no matter WHAT a person has done, I don't want NOBODY to go to hell. Thanks Andy

(Same person as above)

Dear Andy, please tell me why the whole of christendom hails what Paul teaches over what Jesus does. Paul has said and done some good things but if there is a difference in what they teach and when it comes to who am I going to believe, I HAVE to go with Jesus. In my deep studies of this because I came out of a denomination that touted Paul, I am finding some very disturbing differences. If you want to take my name off of the mailing list you can. because I don't like to read a lot of different sayings that someone wrote about the world system etc. Jesus already told us that VERY few would go to heaven. Matthew 7:14 because people refuse to hate life like He said and most everybody has the love of the world in them and God says He is not there, id the love of the world is there. I would that you would talk to me about why you see such differences in this. I was in a baptist denomination that taught us the whole bible was inspired by god and we sat there and believed it. Out of over 34,000 verses in the bible there is only ONE verse that says that and the mysterious Paul said it. If that were the case then I feel very sure that when Jesus came HE would have said that too but nowhere does God tell us through Jesus' mouth that all scripture is inspired by God. XXX in Dallas

[Editor]  I believe this letter comes from a woman that has Bible Study with a few other women.  They have NO HEAD.  I write. I talk on the phone, but MOST never listen

Please pray for this woman, as I am about to lose her. She REALLY needs your prayers.

I'm writing this in regards to the Federal Marriage Amendment which is strongly supported among Christians.   I think that those of us who are Christians or so profess to be (whose lives should follow the precepts of the Christian faith) owe a big apology to those abroad and to those within our own nation.   Instead of upholding and preserving family values, we’ve chosen rather, to embrace those values shared by Hollywood. When choices and lifestyles within the Christian community, particularly in the area of art and entertainment, are indistinguishable from our secular counterpart, it causes one to pause. After all, people will draw conclusions about Christianity when they observe "christians". How many Christians view scantily-clad cheerleaders, unsavory beer commercials, and lingerie advertisements on a regular basis? To the gay community's credit, I never heard tell of any body-baring homos bumping and grinding on the football field during our nation’s favorite pastime.   So, how is an immoral heterosexual community in any position to judge or legislate morality for the homosexual community? Simply put. They can’t; It’s not the culture failing the church, it’s the church failing the culture.   It should be no surprise then that there is some apprehension within some Christian communities to vote for the amendment because to do so would be hypocritical. Maybe there is no credibility to our lives because they have no integrity.   As for "abomination”, that word we so readily use when it comes to homosexuality, here’s a short list of a few others that the Bible cites: arrogance, worldly thoughts, and futile worship (ouch!); Got conviction?   Bottom line: We can't point a finger at others (homosexuals included) until our lives point to the One we profess to follow.     Sunny   (former model/now grace saved  Christian)           I wasn't able to indent where necessary for the paragraphs, so I skipped 3 spaces in between. Dear Andy

Thank you for articles, items & news. They are always appreciated & my

friend Sandra is especially appreciative of them. I have recently passed on a copy of your website on CD to her - she does not have access to the internet which is quite expensive here in South Africa.

Other Baptist friends were liberated by your article on tithing - she had been searching for the answer and you supplied via your website CD.

The church is really going down the tubes, here in South Africa too. We saw Ray McCauley of Rhema Ministries (the one who got divorced & said it did not matter how many times he got divorced, God would continue to bless him). He denied the sufficiency and exclusivity of Jesus Christ on TV on Wednesday in talk show, 3Talk on SABC 3, in which the subject of culture & religion was being discussed. He sat there and did not open his mouth against the presenter saying she prayed to her ancestors and to Jesus. He further gave examples of "godly men" in the example of Martin Luther King, Bishop Tutu (who denies that the Bible is inspired by God) and Nelson Mandela (the man who introduced pornography, abortion, same-sex partnerships etc in SA's constitution in 1994). In the Road to Rustenburg Declaration, McCauley stated that SA should build a Tower of Babel for unity!

I wondered if you can help please. My friend Sandra is looking for input regarding Andrew Comiskey of Living Waters / Desert Streams. He has authored books in the area of sexual relationships - Pursuing Sexual Wholeness, Strength in Weakness. They travel all over to equip and bring healing in the area of brokenness in relationships.

Sandra's son is a Baptist pastor who has now been swept up into the Vineyard and their erroneous teachings. This is just another aspect to what is going on at his church. One of the ladies felt her antenna go up when they brought this in recently.

Do you know anything about it? Sandra says it is a 400 page manual - quite a lot to read - in which they talk of avoiding the confessional, and the eucharist which makes it sound catholicky.

Any input from you would be appreciated.

In His Service

Dear XXX
I have gathered a little "stuff" I hope may be helpful.

Please keep in touch and may our God & Savior bless you.

I can say, without doubt, that Andrew Comiskey and Living Waters/Desert Streams are ecumenical and full of psychology.  Even his books are listed for sale under the "psychology" heading.

The little bit of info is coming in several letters.

Hi Andy,

Have you heard or read anything about the Kingdom message? I don't know much but there's a lot of talk about it here in India that the saved may not enter into the 1000 year reign with the Lord Jesus Christ but they will be cast into outer darkness where there's weeping and gnashing of teeth for the 1000 years but they are still saved for eternity.

Do let me know if you know of any links I could check out to confirm or disagree with this teaching when I speak to people. Thanks for your help in advance.

I printed the One Man Ministry and other teaches from your online resources.

God keep you in good health because you're such a blessing to me and others

I sent her the Standing on the Promises of God article that you can find in the May-June-2004 Newsletter

Hi Andy,

Thank you for your reply. I agree totally with you because that's what the

Word of God says. The site you gave me (kingdombaptist) is one of the links on the site that I was given by the people here. I knew how wrong they were when they made statements such as Judas Iscariot is saved and all Jews before the cross are saved and in Heaven. If that were true then Jesus died in vain. They nullify the cross by such statements.

Bible study is really needed among believers - they err because they don't know the scriptures. I pray that God will use me to teach these people what I know from His Word.

That's another thing they don't hold on to - the Word of God in the KJV. They think the originals were correct and keep going back to the Hebrew and

Greek (not that they can read it!) and make statements that the KJV English is too difficult to follow. I don't think so!

But if you met these people you will feel they are such wonderful people who serve the Lord with all they have and yet when it comes to doctrine they are so far from the truth

Do keep India especially Mumbai in your prayers. Love to mom and you / XXX

PS - thanks for mailing the books to me.

[Editor] This is sometimes a very depressing ministry and sometimes it is a very joyful ministry.  The Lord God keeps it very balanced.  He will not lay more on us that we can bear.
